The 22 Major Arcana in Your Destiny Matrix: Full Reference

In the 22 major arcana destiny matrix system, every arcana has a light side and a shadow side. Most lists give you both and stop. The part that actually matters is the third thing — what happens when that arcana sits in a specific position in your chart.

By Elysia Rayne · 28 min read · Updated June 2026

I have read charts where someone got arcana 13 (Death) in their centre and immediately closed the tab, convinced something terrible was about to happen. I have read charts where someone got the Tower in their relationship zone and spent three months bracing for a breakup that never came. And I have read charts where someone got arcana 10 (Wheel of Fortune) and decided the universe owed them good luck.

Every one of those reactions comes from the same mistake: reading the card without reading the position.

An arcana is not a verdict. It is not a personality description either, no matter what half the internet says. It is an energy. The position in the chart is where that energy lives. Change the position and you change the reading, even when the number is identical.

So this reference works like this. For each arcana you get three things: the core theme, the light expression, the shadow expression, and then a note on how it shifts when it sits in the centre, in the portrait zone, in the relationship zone, or in the karmic tail. If you just want to look up a single number, use the TOC. If you want to actually get good at reading charts, read the position notes carefully — that is where the real skill lives.

HOW TO USE THIS PAGE

1. Find your number in the TOC or scroll to it.

2. Read the core theme and the light / shadow first. That is the arcana itself.

3. Read the position note for wherever that number sits in your chart. That is the reading.

4. Remember that arcana 8 and 11 are swapped between Marseille and Rider-Waite. If your chart shows Strength at 8, your calculator is using Rider-Waite.

Two notes before you start

Note one: arcana 8 and 11. This page uses the Marseille order, where Justice is 8 and Strength is 11. The Rider-Waite Tarot, published in 1909, swapped them. Destiny Matrix follows Marseille. If your chart shows Strength at 8, your calculator is either following Rider-Waite or has a bug. Either way, only those two arcana are affected — everything else is identical between the two decks.

Note two: position changes meaning. Same number, different zone, different question. A 4 in the centre is the Emperor as a core pattern — the builder, the one who organises reality. A 4 in the karmic tail is a past-life theme of rigidity or control, a pattern of over-structuring that is still unfinished. The card is the same. The message is not.

The arcana is the what. The position is the where. Read both or read nothing.

1 — The Magician

1

The Magician

Will · Skill · Manifestation

CORE THEME

The one who can make things happen. All the tools are already on the table — it is just a question of using them.

LIGHT

Resourcefulness, focus, the ability to start and finish. The person who says “I will figure it out” and then does.

SHADOW

Manipulation, half-finished projects, promising more than can be delivered. The one who talks about what they will do instead of doing it.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, the Magician is your core operating mode — you are someone who builds reality by deciding to. In the portrait zone, others see you as capable, sometimes intimidatingly so. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of power used badly — either manipulation or the refusal to use the power you had. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of being the one who does all the work.

2 — The High Priestess

2

The High Priestess

Intuition · Depth · Silence

CORE THEME

The one who knows but does not say. The keeper of what is unspoken.

LIGHT

Deep intuition, the ability to sit with the unknown, a capacity for mystery that makes people want to know you.

SHADOW

Secrecy, isolation, refusing to be known. Wisdom that becomes a hiding place. The person who is “deep” and unreadable and lonely.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you process the world through feel before thought, and people sense there is more to you than you show. In the portrait zone, others feel slightly shut out — you are perceived as mysterious whether you want to be or not. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of knowledge kept silent, often with a real cost. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of not telling partners what you actually need.

3 — The Empress

3

The Empress

Nurture · Creativity · Growth

CORE THEME

The one who grows things. Fertility in the widest sense — not just biological, though that is included.

LIGHT

Creativity, care, the ability to bring things to life. The person who makes things feel possible.

SHADOW

Over-giving, smothering, losing yourself in care for others. Martyrdom that looks like love.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you are the one who creates — with your hands, your time, or your attention. In the portrait zone, people feel safe around you. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of giving so much that you disappeared, or expecting care you did not receive. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of being the caretaker in every relationship, even when the other person did not ask for it.

4 — The Emperor

4

The Emperor

Structure · Authority · Discipline

CORE THEME

The one who builds systems. Order imposed on chaos. The parent who knows the answer and expects you to follow it.

LIGHT

Discipline, leadership, the capacity to hold a structure together when things get difficult. Reliability that people can feel.

SHADOW

Rigidity, control, brittle authority. The person who needs to be right, who cannot let go of the wheel, who confuses control with safety.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you are the person others rely on, sometimes to the point where you feel responsible for things you did not choose. In the portrait zone, you come across as structured, maybe a little rigid. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of either excessive control or authority being taken from you. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of taking charge of the relationship and then resenting being in charge.

5 — The Hierophant

5

The Hierophant

Tradition · Teaching · Belief

CORE THEME

The one who carries tradition forward. The bridge between what has been known and the people who need to know it.

LIGHT

Teaching, moral clarity, genuine wisdom passed down. Someone who can make old ideas live again.

SHADOW

Dogma, conformity, preaching what you do not practice. The person who is right about everything and therefore wrong about what matters.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you are shaped by inherited frameworks — religious, cultural, professional — and you carry them whether you mean to or not. In the portrait zone, you are seen as principled, sometimes preachy. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of either abuse of religious or educational authority, or being crushed by it. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of expecting a partner to fit a model they did not agree to.

6 — The Lovers

6

The Lovers

Choice · Values · Connection

CORE THEME

The one who chooses. The tension between what you want and what you are loyal to. Every value judgment is a lovers card.

LIGHT

Genuine connection, alignment between values and actions, the capacity to choose and stand by the choice.

SHADOW

Indecision, people-pleasing, choosing everyone so you do not have to choose anyone. Chronic compromise that erodes you.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, every decision you make is a values decision, and you feel it — you cannot move forward without internally agreeing with yourself. In the portrait zone, others see you as relational, warm, sometimes suggestible. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of choosing badly or refusing to choose at all. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of a choice you keep having to make — often between what you feel and what you have decided to commit to.

7 — The Chariot

7

The Chariot

Will · Movement · Direction

CORE THEME

The one who moves forward. Momentum as a life orientation. You get in and you drive.

LIGHT

Drive, direction, the capacity to push through resistance and keep going even when it is hard.

SHADOW

Burnout, forcing outcomes, the inability to stop even when stopping is what is needed. Running faster to avoid feeling.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, your default mode is to move — stillness feels like failure, even when stillness is the answer. In the portrait zone, you are seen as ambitious, sometimes pushy. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of forced movement — being dragged forward against your will, or forcing others to move. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of outrunning a feeling that keeps catching up.

8 — Justice

8

Justice

Balance · Fairness · Consequence

CORE THEME

The one who balances the scale. Every action has a consequence. Not punishment — consequence.

LIGHT

Clarity, fairness, honest accounting of what happened and what it cost. The person who tells you the truth even when it is uncomfortable.

SHADOW

Rigidity, harshness, keeping score. Righteousness that has forgotten mercy. The person who needs to be fair more than they need to be kind.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you are wired for accountability — yours and everyone else’s. In the portrait zone, you come across as honest but maybe cold. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of either having caused an injustice that is still unfinished, or having been subjected to one. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of a debt — real or emotional — that neither partner will name.

Rider-Waite readers may know this as arcana 11. See the note above on the swap.

9 — The Hermit

9

The Hermit

Solitude · Reflection · Search

CORE THEME

The one who withdraws to understand. Not antisocial — just aware that clarity comes alone.

LIGHT

Wisdom, self-awareness, the willingness to sit with difficult questions instead of running from them.

SHADOW

Isolation, avoidance, superiority masked as solitude. The person who has confused being alone with being safe.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you need periods of retreat and will feel wrong without them. In the portrait zone, others sense you are self-sufficient, sometimes to the point of seeming unreachable. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of knowledge lost in isolation — of wisdom that never reached anyone. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of pulling away to think, and the partner who experiences that as abandonment.

10 — Wheel of Fortune

10

Wheel of Fortune

Cycles · Change · Faith in motion

CORE THEME

The one who is moved. Things turn. Nothing stays the same, including the parts you would like to.

LIGHT

Adaptability, patience with cycles, the ability to ride change instead of fighting it.

SHADOW

Passivity, waiting for things to change on their own, believing the universe owes you a good turn because you have had a bad one.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, your life is marked by cycles — patterns that return, phases that repeat with different faces. In the portrait zone, others may experience you as unreliable or, alternatively, adaptable. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of being caught in a cycle you could not escape. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of relationships that end and return, or repeat with different people.

11 — Strength

11

Strength

Courage · Endurance · Quiet power

CORE THEME

The one who endures. Not the loud strength of the Chariot — the quiet strength of holding the line when no one is watching.

LIGHT

Patience, resilience, the capacity to stay with difficult things without needing to fix them.

SHADOW

Silent suffering, martyrdom, refusing to ask for help because asking feels like weakness.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you are able to hold much more than people realise, and you often do. In the portrait zone, others perceive you as steady — sometimes so steady they forget you might need support. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of endurance without reward. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of being the one who tolerates, the one who stays, the one who holds while the other collapses.

Rider-Waite readers may know this as arcana 8. See the note above on the swap.

12 — The Hanged Man

12

The Hanged Man

Pause · Perspective · Surrender

CORE THEME

The one who stops. Not because there is nothing to do, but because the view from the current angle is wrong.

LIGHT

Perspective, willingness to surrender control, the capacity to sit in suspension instead of forcing resolution.

SHADOW

Paralysis, avoidance dressed as waiting, suffering that has become a lifestyle because stopping is too honest.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you keep arriving at moments where the answer is “wait” and you do not want to hear it. In the portrait zone, others might read you as passive or uncommitted. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of forced sacrifice or of being sacrificed. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of being suspended — undecided, unclaimed, waiting for someone else to move.

13 — Death

13

Death

Ending · Transformation · Release

CORE THEME

The one who ends things. Not literal death. The end of a chapter you have already left, whether or not you have acknowledged it.

LIGHT

Transformation, release, the willingness to let what is finished be finished. The start of something that could not begin while the old was still there.

SHADOW

Refusal to let go. Clinging to what is already over. Extended suffering because the ending has not been accepted.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, your life moves in chapters, and every chapter has required an ending you resisted. In the portrait zone, others may find you intense or prone to sudden shifts. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of endings unfinished — deaths, departures, losses that were not processed. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of not being able to fully close what needs closing.

I want to say this directly: Death is not ominous. It is the most commonly misread arcana in the deck. If a reader tells you it means death or disaster, they are fear-selling.

14 — Temperance

14

Temperance

Integration · Patience · Alchemy

CORE THEME

The one who blends. Two things that do not obviously belong together, mixed into something that does.

LIGHT

Integration, patience, synthesis. The capacity to hold complexity without collapsing it into simplicity.

SHADOW

Indecision, half-measures, watering yourself down to keep the peace.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, your life keeps asking you to blend contradictions — work and family, ambition and care, self and other. In the portrait zone, others see you as balanced, sometimes as bland. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of extremism that left something unfinished in the middle. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of blending with a partner until you cannot tell where you end.

15 — The Devil

15

The Devil

Bondage · Obsession · The chain you hold

CORE THEME

The one who is bound. A chain you are still holding, whether or not you remember picking it up.

LIGHT

Awareness of what binds you. The moment you see the chain, you can start to examine the lock.

SHADOW

Addiction, obsession, bondage to desire. Attachment to something you know is hurting you, justified as passion, need, or love.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you have a repeating attachment — a pattern you return to knowing it will hurt you, because the return is what feels real. In the portrait zone, others may sense an intensity in you that can be magnetic or unsettling. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of bondage — addiction, servitude, obsession that was never resolved. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of needing someone more than is healthy, and calling it love.

16 — The Tower

16

The Tower

Rupture · Liberation · Collapse of the false

CORE THEME

The one that breaks. Not because breaking is the point, but because what was standing was not honest.

LIGHT

Liberation from what was false. The moment a fiction ends and something honest can start.

SHADOW

Dramatic collapse, chaos, self-sabotage dressed as sudden insight. The person who keeps blowing up their own life and calls it growth.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, your life has had moments where the ground disappeared, and those moments have shaped you more than any plan. In the portrait zone, others may find you unpredictable — sometimes magnetic for that reason. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of collapse that was never rebuilt. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of a relationship blowing up at the point where it could have deepened.

17 — The Star

17

The Star

Hope · Healing · Renewal

CORE THEME

The one who hopes. Not because things are fine, but because something in you refuses to give up on what could be.

LIGHT

Healing, faith, the ability to see the way forward after the Tower has done its work.

SHADOW

Naïveté, unreachable ideals, hoping without acting. The dream that replaces the life.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you hold an ideal that has not arrived yet, and it shapes everything you do. In the portrait zone, others see you as hopeful, sometimes unrealistically so. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of hope that was betrayed — you hoped for something and it did not come. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of hoping a partner will become someone they are not.

18 — The Moon

18

The Moon

Illusion · Fear · Unknowing

CORE THEME

The one who fears. Not because the fear is accurate, but because the light is not strong enough to see clearly.

LIGHT

Intuition, dream, the willingness to stay in uncertainty rather than forcing clarity that is not there.

SHADOW

Paranoia, illusion, seeing threats in shadows. The person who cannot trust their own perception and then cannot trust anything.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, your deepest struggle is with things you cannot see clearly, and your deepest gift is intuition that arrives before the conscious mind catches up. In the portrait zone, others may perceive you as unpredictable. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of fear left unresolved, often around betrayal or deception. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of not being able to trust what you cannot see.

19 — The Sun

19

The Sun

Joy · Clarity · Vitality

CORE THEME

The one who shines. Light so clear that nothing can hide, including the parts you would prefer to keep hidden.

LIGHT

Joy, clarity, vitality. The capacity to be fully seen without collapsing.

SHADOW

Performance, burnout from constant output, needing applause to feel real.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you are wired to be seen — and the fear is not being seen, not being seen too much. In the portrait zone, others are drawn to you, sometimes more than you want. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of visibility that went badly — you were seen and it cost you. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of being the sun in the relationship while the partner is the planet, or vice versa.

20 — Judgement

20

Judgement

Awakening · Reckoning · The call

CORE THEME

The one who wakes up. A reckoning that arrives whether or not you feel ready.

LIGHT

Awakening, clarity, the ability to hear a call you have been ignoring. The moment when you finally answer.

SHADOW

Judging yourself or others, being unable to answer the call, hearing it and pretending you did not.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, your life is punctuated by moments where something wakes you up whether you wanted it to or not. In the portrait zone, others may perceive you as intense or scrutinising. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of judgement — either being judged unjustly or judging unjustly. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of a reckoning that arrives at every crossroads.

21 — The World

21

The World

Completion · Wholeness · Arrival

CORE THEME

The one who completes. Not because everything is finished, but because a cycle has closed and you can feel it.

LIGHT

Wholeness, closure, the ability to arrive at the end of something and be able to stand in it.

SHADOW

Stuck at the edge of the circle, never quite finishing. The person who starts everything and completes nothing because completing means accepting.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, your life is oriented toward integration — you want the pieces to fit, and you work at it. In the portrait zone, others see you as complete, sometimes intimidatingly so. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of incompletion — something started and never finished, and the unfinished thing is still unfinished. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of relationships that circle but do not land, or that land and then become too comfortable to move.

22 — The Fool

22

The Fool

Beginning · Faith · Leap

CORE THEME

The one who leaps. The beginning that only exists because you took the step.

LIGHT

Faith, freedom, the willingness to move before you have everything figured out.

SHADOW

Recklessness, avoidance, using “I do not know yet” as a place to live so you never have to commit to anything.

POSITION NOTE

In the centre, you keep arriving at moments where you have to leap without a net, and the leap is the whole point. In the portrait zone, others see you as free-spirited, sometimes unreliable. In the karmic tail, it points to a past-life pattern of beginnings that went badly — you started something and the start itself was the undoing. In the relationship zone, it flags the recurring dynamic of starting over with the same shape of person in a different body.

Frequently asked questions

The Marseille Tarot order has Justice as 8 and Strength as 11. The Rider-Waite deck swapped them in 1909. Destiny Matrix follows Marseille. If your chart shows Strength at 8, that calculator is using Rider-Waite labels. Only those two arcana are affected.

No. Position changes the reading. A 16 in the centre is the Tower as a core pattern. A 16 in the relationship zone is the Tower as what you repeat in close relationships. Same card, different area of life. The arcana is the what, the position is the where.

No. It is not literal death. It is the arcana of endings and transformation. Death means something is finished and something else is starting. It is uncomfortable, not ominous. Anyone who tells you otherwise is fear-selling.

The Devil is a chain you are still holding. The Tower is the chain breaking whether you want it to or not. The Devil is bondage you have not named. The Tower is what happens when the naming is forced on you.

Elysia has read charts for years and still has to pause before reading arcana 13 for anyone. She wrote this reference because most arcana lists online describe the card without explaining how the position changes the reading — which is where half the confusion in this niche comes from. She has a particular dislike of the phrase “the universe is telling you” and a growing tolerance for the phrase “I am not sure.” More on the about page.
